Ke Ala Hou Fall 2011
Giving to HWS
Making a Difference for Children
Philanthropy is a key ingredient for excellence in education at Haleakalā Waldorf School.
To accomplish our goals, Haleakalā Waldorf School relies upon the support and involvement of our entire community-- board members, faculty and staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, friends, and community members--through a coordinated series of fundraising activities. Every contributor is an important stakeholder in this unique community that nurtures our children so completely. Your philanthropic participation is essential to making a difference in the life of a child!
DONATE NOW!
There are many opportunities to give at Haleakalā Waldorf School whether it be through the annual fund, scholarships and tuition assistance, a special project you are interested in supporting, legacy giving, special events or your time through volunteerism. Read on for information on our giving programs.
To show our appreciation for the generosity of our donors, we publish our Ke Ala Hou newsletter annual Giving Report issue each fall. In this issue, each contributor to HWS is listed, recognizing the excellence that donors make possible at HWS.

HWS Annual Giving Fund 2011-12
The Annual Fund
Lōkahi
Harmony through Collaboration
The Annual Fund is HWS’ most important fundraising activity of the year and an essential part of the school’s operating budget. Our yearly budget is comprised of a blend of tuition income and your philanthropic support. It is a yearly appeal to all members of our community to make tax-deductible contributions that help ensure the best possible education for our children by supporting the current operations and essential needs of the school. These gifts improve the daily life of every student and every faculty member.
Our goal this year is to raise $140,000. Every gift is appreciated!
Please contact the Advancement Office at 808-878-2511, ext. 16, for more information.

Financial Aid
Tuition Assistance
While the primary responsibility for the cost of each student’s education falls to the family of each student, we recognize that financing an independent school education is difficult for some families. Many parents choose Waldorf for the unique curriculum and nurturing environment and will go to great lengths and sacrifice to provide that education for their children. We are committed to helping these families afford this choice. Your support of Tuition Assistance through the Annual Fund can help make a child’s education possible.
Rising Sun Scholarship Fund

The HWS Rising Sun Scholarship Fund supports exceptional students who show the promise of becoming tomorrow's leaders in a globally interconnected world. By reducing financial barriers for remarkable students, this fund enables students to attend HWS where they can develop the capacities for:
- Critical, creative and imaginative thinking
- Clear and creative communication
- Awareness of broader historical, social, political, ethical and cultural contexts
- Willingness to address the "big" questions confronting society
- Ability to embrace the differences one encounters in a multicultural world
Help make this possible for an exceptional student. For more information, please call Jocelyn Romero Demirbag at 808-878-2511, ext.11.
Special Projects and Directed Gifts
Gifts may be directed to a specific area of interest according to donor interest and the school’s need. Please contact the Chair of School at 808-878-2511, ext. 11, to discuss how your gift can help.
Endowment
HWS seeks to build our endowed funds to provide a steady stream of income in support of the school, allowing for your donation to have an impact over a longer period of time.
Holiday Faire and Silent Auction
The HWS Holiday Faire is a 25 year old tradition that is our most festive fundraising event. The Silent Auction plays an important part of the Holiday Faire, providing opportunities for shoppers or publicity for businesses when they donate an in-kind item to the auction. The Holiday Faire is a hugh success with local and international craft vendors, 'ono' (delicious) food and wonderful live entertainment along with hands on crafts, a bake sale, farmer’s market, games, puppetry and more. This annual event is held on the first Saturday in December.
Volunteerism
This is a great way to support our school. For more information on how you can give back, please contact us at 878-2511 or info@waldorfmaui.org.
Volunteerism is the cornerstone to our HWS Community. More than a third of our parent body is engaged in volunteerism on a regular basis. The HWS journey is for the whole family. We as family members or friends of the school, like our children, have the opportunity to partake in a wide array of diverse experiences. From the happy cheer and fellowship of Aloha Coffee Hour every Friday morning, to the deep and rewarding work in our gardens, we are all working together to serve our school and our children. From field trips to class plays, the opportunities to volunteer are as unique as you are.

It’s easy to spread your gift out over time when you elect to pay by credit card. If you wish to have your credit card charged monthly or in quarterly installments, please contact the Advancement Office at (808) 878-2511, ext. 16.
Securities
Make a gift of appreciated securities – a terrific way to support the Annual Fund that also provides donors with significant tax benefits. Please contact the Advancement Office for specific instructions.
Matching Gifts
Many companies offer programs whereby charitable gifts by an employee (or members of his/her family) are matched by the employer.
Memorial and Tribute Gifts
HWS welcomes gifts in memory or in honor of a student, teacher, staff member, a beloved family member or a friend. This is a thoughtful way to honor a person’s life or acknowledge a specific accomplishment. Memorial and Tribute gifts will be recognized in our Annual Giving Report.
